On May 27, 2009 in Geneva leaders of the global (NSWP) and regional networking projects in the area of sex work met with Michel Sidibe, UNAIDS Executive Director, as well as with representatives of agencies – co-sponsors of UNAIDS.

The main focus of discussion included the UNAIDS guide on sex work and HIV, published in 2009. Leaders of networks of sex workers noted abolitionist ideology underlying the current version of the guide and the weak role of global and regional networks in the process of its preparation. Michel Sidibe, has agreed that the guidelines should be improved, and that the role of networks of sex workers in this process should become more meaningful. He also agreed that an important further step should focus on the decriminalization of sex work.

From NSWP it was suggested for the working group to be established on HIV and sex work, facilitated by UNAIDS and Co-Chairman Representative of NSWP,  to adequately represent the organizations of sex workers, including NSWP and regional network projects of sex workers, as well as UN agencies.
