On June 17 a new methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) center was opened in the town of Korca, Albania. It took almost one year to open the center and the main support came from the Ministry of Health (GFATM), local government of Korca, members of parliament, parents and others.

Korca area counts vast drug users population. Before the new MMT center was opened on June 17, 2009, many drug users had to go to the capital of Albania, Tirana to receive basic drug treatment. At the moment 35 clients receive treatment in the newly-opened center and their number is expected to grow. One nurse and one doctor are employed to serve clients.

Currently three MMT centers run by Aksion+ offer drug users treatment across Albania: center in Tirana involves 116 clients, in Durres - 56 clients and center in Korca enrolled 35 clients in two weeks time. All MMT centers operating in the country are supported by GFATM. Aksion+ have plans to open one more MMT center by the end of this year.
