Dear members of the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network, thank you for your active participation in EHRN's survey to determine the technical support priorities of our members for 2012. During the online survey, held from 23 September until 1 November, we received 154 votes from 21 countries in the EECA region. 57 people representing 55 organizations gave their votes for various technical support services and topics. We received 154 votes from 21 countries in the EECA region. 57 people, representing 55 organizations gave their votes for various technical support services and topics.

Distribution of votes (%) throughout the countries. There are relatively many EHRN members in Russia and Ukraine, and votes from these countries amounted to more than one 1/3 of all votes. Russia and Ukraine, along with Belarus, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan contributed more than half of the total votes.

Types of technical support

The most requested types of technical support were on-site mentoring and study tours, followed by trainings.

  • Mentoring, or on-site technical support, was most requested in support of organizational development – Burn our prevention and Developing and managing harm reduction programs.
  • Study tours were requested with regard to Developing services for women and Drug use HIV/TB co-infection.
  • The most requested training topics were – Management and evaluation of harm reduction projects and Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST): advocacy on the national level.
  • The most requested topics for local capacity building (trainings of/for trainers) – Hepatitis C: Treatment and care for people who inject drugs and Developing services for female drug users.
  • The only seminar proposed - Adapting services to the changing drug use scene: new and pharmacy drugs, was demanded by more than 6% of respondents.

Developing services for female drug users – was the most in-demand topic, with several types of technical support services requested, the most popular of which Mwas study tours.

Overdose prevention and response – was the second most requested topic, and the largest portion of survey respondents preferred on-site mentoring for starting and developing of overdose prevention programs.

Hepatitis C – was the third most requested topic, and the most popular types of technical support were trainings and mentoring on hepatitis C Treatment and care for people who inject drugs, as well as trainings on community-based advocacy for reducing treatment prices.

Based on these results, Harm Reduction Knowledge Hub for Europe and Central Asia will raise funds to implement the most requested technical support services. Aiming to support our members, priority for receiving technical support will be given to organizational and individual members.
